ANNUAL REPORT RECEIVED
Operator: United Companies of Mesa County MAY 19 2003
Operation: BLM Pit #1 Division ~f Minerals and Geology
File Number: M-2001-100
Anniversary Date: May I5, 2003
The BLM Pit #1 was opened this year. Active mining took place during the months of
June and July in the Block 1 part of the permit area.
Prior to beginning gravel mining at the site, all topsoil. and subsoil was removed and
segregated from the Block 1 area. Topsoil was removed and stockpiled on an adjoining
part of the BLM Pit 1 area (Block 2). Subsoil vas also removed and stockpiled on the
Hall Pit area. The topsoil and subsoil stockpiles were seeded as called for in the
reclamation plan.
Approximately 42,000 tons were mined at the BLM Pit and processed (crushed and
screened). During the period of active mining during the report year, the floor of the pit
area did not develop as expected. A large hump or roll is present at the floor of the pit.
The floor of the pit is composed of Mancos shale. The roll in the pit floor is actually
longitudinal feature that runs approximately east to west and is an increase in the
elevation of the floor. The effect of this hump in the pit floor is to diminish the volume of
gravel that we actually found at the site compared to what we expected. We expected a
nearly flat pit floor.
Processing and stockpiling of this material was done on the adjoining Hall Pit.
Approximately 2,000 tons of material has been sold and removed from the site.
