• Appendices F and C are water quality statistics reports for surface water monitoring sites
at both the Nucla and Nucia East mining areas. Appendix F includes statistics on total
values for metals, while Appendix G includes statistics on total recoverable values for
the same parameters. It should be noted that statistics were performed on all historic
data for each site, which may or may not include historic values determined using
different detection limits than are currently being employed by Peabody's present contract
laboratory (ACZ Laboratories, Steamboat Springs, Colorado). The computer program used to
calculate the statistics and generate these reports includes those analyses results
reported as "less than" the detection limit, resulting in means and minimum values of
parameters not representative of the parameter sample population. Peabody is currently
working on rectifying this problem and will submit more accurate statistical reports in
future AHR's.
Ground Water
Monitoring Programs at Nucla and Nucla East. The locations of all monitoring wells within
and adjacent to the Nucla and Nucla East mining areas are shown on Exhibit 1. Presented
• on Table 5 are all ground water monitoring well site and completion summaries for the
Nucla and Nucla East mining areas.
Explanations and interpretations of the data presented in this section are as succinct as
possible. A detailed explanation of the hydrologic monitoring program will be presented
in the forthcoming Nucla East Mine Permit Application.
New Wells. During the 1987 water year three additional spoil monitor wells (CW-N26
_. through GW-N28) were installed at the Nucla Mine to help better define the spoils aquifer
system. In addition to the three spoil monitor wells at Nucla Mine, Peabody also
installed Monitor Well CW-N4R as a replacement Hell for GW-N4. To better define baseline
ground water conditions at the Nucta East mining area, Peabody completed five exploration
bore holes into monitor Hells. Those wells are GW-N30 through CW-N34. Completion
summaries for the newly installed monitor wells are presented on Ta61e 5, and lithologic
logs and well completion summaries (including drawings for each of the new monitor wells)
are contained in Appendix H.
• Water Levels. All water level data collected through the 1987 water year from the various
aquifers within an adjacent to the Nucla and Nucla East mining areas are presented it
13
