WILL~9MS FORK COMPAN4
October 23, 1997
RECcI~~~.l-;
Mr. Cazl Mount
Division of Minerals and Geology ~CT q ~ tgg~
1313 Sherman St., Room 215 C
Denver, CO 80203
Dear Mr. Mount:
RE: Annual Sand and Gravel 112 Report for 1996-97, and Notice of Intent to Continue
Mining Operations (Permit No. M-84-168)
Enclosed please find the Williams Fork Company 1996-97 Sand and Gravel Operations report, map and
annual fee payment ($550). We intend to continue mining operations into 1998. The enclosed map
illustrates the surveyed disturbance acreage which has been actively mined (23.9 acres) and total
disturbance (37.5 acres). 'Ihe 5.3 acres of new disturbance includes topsoil stripping for pit
advancement and placement of a new topsoil stockpile. The map also shows storm water control
ditches, which were associated with Technical Revision OS to the above-referenced permit.
No additional acres wen; permanently reclaimed during the 2996-97 report period, although several
acres were seeded. Topsoil salvaged ahead of pit advancement was placed into a new topsoil stockpile
at the southwest comer of the permit area. The new stockpile will not require temporary seeding
because with the heavy rainfall received in September 1997 native grasses and forts became well
established. The topsoil stockpiles that existed at the beginning of 1997 were interseeded in May 1997
with a temporary seed mixture similar to the mix presented in Table E-3 of Permit No. M-84-168. The
interseeding was accomplished in order to augment the wver of perennial plaint species on the
stockpiles.
As stated above, during the past report period (October 26, 1996 through October 25, 1997) 1.9 new
acres were mined and 5.3 acres wen: newly disturbed. The projection for the 1997-98 report period is
for approximately 3.1 acres of new disturbance in Mine Area #4.
As we discussed by telephone, Williams Fork Company will be working with the Yampa River Legacy
Project and state agencies, including DMG and DOW, during the coming year to try and put together a
new reclamation plan for the gravel pit that will inwrporate wildlife habitat and possible public
recreation considerations.
Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
Sincerely, `C~~
Forrest V./Luke
Manager of Environmental Affairs
FVIlsb
[C:1S&GARJ
enei P.O.
