-~ - --
CANON CITY DOLOMITE QUARRY
Study Area
The test plot at the Canon City Dolomite Quarry was established in
. the fall of 1976 on waste material from the mining of dolomite. The plot
elevation is 6,100 feet, and an annual average precipitation of
12.6 inches is received according to the Canon City meteorological
. records. Soil analyses performed on samples taken in July 1976 showed
gravel fragments greater than 2 mm accounting for 55 percent of the waste
material volume. The remaining 45 percent of the waste material was
. classified as a loamy sand in texture. The pH was 8.8, and the electrical
conductivity was 1.3 to 2.2 mmhos/cm. The organic matter content was
. 0.3 percent, and lime was determined to be low to medium. The total .soil
analysis is included in Appendix Table 1.
The Canon City Quarry is within the Pinyon-Juniper Woodland life
. zone. Pinyon pine (Pines edulis) and juniper (Juniperus scopulerum)
dominate the overstory. The herbaceous understory dominates are: blue
. grama (Bouteloua gracilis), sideoats grama (Bouteloua curtipendula),
Indian rice9rass (oryzopsis hymenoides), sand dropseed (Sporobolus
c_yptandrus}, and letterman needlegrass (Stipa Zettermcmnii). Rubber
rabbitbrush (Chrysothrnmzus nauseosus) and mountain mahogany (Cercoc~aus
spp.) are the most prevalent shrubs.

4
