24
A mixture of native and introduced grasses, forbs, and shrubs was
broadcast over the Main Plot in December 1976 (Table 7). The seed was applied
at 14.40 kg pure live seed (PLS)/ha (634 PLS/mz) and covered by light
raking. M~.ched subplots were covered with excelsior matting and held in
place with wire staples.
CF&I personnel designed and established an irrigation system in July
1977. The system, however, did not provide even water coverage, and records
were not kept of the amount of water applied. Irrigation was not used in any
of the following growing seasons.
Livestock damaged the plot in the fall of 1977. A barbed wire fence
was constructed around the plot perimeter in the same year, and no further
livestock grazing has occurred. Limited grazing by rabbits, deer, and other
wildlife species has been observed as recent as the summer of 1980.
Species Evaluation Plot
Sixteen species of grasses, forbs, and shrubs were seeded in two 1.2-m
rows east of the t4ain Plot (Figure 5). The plot was uniformly fertilized with
220 kg PzOs/ha, 66 kg K20/ha, and 66 kg NJ ha. Seeding was done by hand in
December of 1976. The species used in this trial are the same as listed in
Table 7.
Results
,J. ; .. Al ,..
Treatment differences, averaged over three replications, are illustrated
in Figures 5-8 and Table 8. Treatments 6 and 2 produced significantly (p_`.10)
more biomass than Treatment 1, with Treatment 5 indicating a marginal differ-
ence from Treatment 1. Treatment 6 produced the greatest biomass; however,
