The high
infiltration rate of this material permits water storage beneath the root
zone of seedlings. The coarse surface texture is, in effect, acting as a
`! mulch. Because of this, the need for mulch is diminished on very coarse
textured soils, such as those found at this site.
The application of phosphorus and potassium without nitrogen on
Treatment 2 (200# PzOs/a, 60# Kz0/a) produced an increase in cover of the
seeded species over that found on the absolute control (Treatment 1).
Treatment 2 had a cover value of 15 percent, while the absolute control
had a cover value of 6 percent. In future operations, both phosphorus
and potassium applications should be considered at the rates applied in
this study.
The summer of 1978 was very dry at. the Canon City Dolomite Quarry,
and no acceptable water was available for irrigating. These factors
provided conditions of drought-stress which will be assessed during the
third growing season.
The .invading weed species (kochia and yellow sweetclover) did not
appear to strongly hinder the emergence and growth of the seeded species
in the first or second growing seasons. Kochia was strongly drought
affected by late July and did not produce seed. The seeded species in
Treatment 6 did not seem adversely affected by the yellow sweetclover
and may have benefited from cover provided by the clover.
