CASTLE CONCRETE COMPANY'S
MINED LAND RECLAMATION
1984 ANNUAL REPORT
SYNDER QUARRY
77-210
REPORT IN BRIEF Little change actually occurred during the last
year. The mining area shifted slightly and the pit was somewhat
deepened. The berm seeding and tree planting were very success-
ful. A plan is being prepared which will substantially improve
the visual aspects.
RULE 2.41(1): The entire permit area has been opened for
extraction. The extraction area, like last year, was on the west
wall area, but it also rotated to the north rim. Somewhat more
extraction occurred on the bottom of the pit and some areas were
greatly deepened. Some areas appear to be within about 60 feet
of the final depth.
RULE 2.41(2): No areas have been fully reclaimed in the last
year.
RULE 2.41(3): The visual berm remains as the only area under
full reclamation work.
RULE 2,41(4): No seeding was done.
RULE 2.41 (S): No fertilizers were applied.
RULE 2.41(6): The visual berm has shown tremendous growth, even
on some of the back slopes. It is apparent that topsoil is
essential to producing an excellent growth on this material when
in this situation.
Most of the deciduous trees survived the first year in good
condition, but a large proportion of the Junipers did not
survive. We suspect there is some kind of chemical
incompatibility with the growth medium. A much better assessment
of the success of the trees and shrubs will be made early this
next summer.
The grasses and legumes were very successful, especially on the
benches. The soil has also produced a great deal of volunteer
growth, but very few weeds have appeared. Apparently, this soil
had never been exposed to heavy weed growths. Most of the
species that have appeared include Gambel Oak, mountain mahogany
(in great abundance), solomon seal, sunflower, and various sages.
This area will be sampled this next year to establish a baseline
of quantitative data on vegetation density, cover, and frequency.
