Bann
Divisors DireROr
sample Tim Chervick
subsoil analysis from
Though some variation exists between sample splits for certain parameters,
both refuse data sets indicate highly sodic, moderately saline material. No
apparent problems were indicated for topsoil or subsoil material. As I
indicated by letter of June 8. 1990, upward diffusion of salts into replaced
cover soils could be a potential reclamation concern. I would recommend the
following sampling be conducted upon completion of plot construction this
summer:
In both the north facing and south facing study area, at least one
representative sample should be taken from the 12" cover depth plots.
Also in both study areas, at least one representative sample should be
taken from each 12' cover soil increment in the 48" cover depth plots.
Sampling procedures and locations will need to be documented to allow for
valid comparison based on future sample results. Each sample should be
analy2ed for texture, electrical conductivity and sodium adsorption
ratio, By repeating the sampling in future years, fif should be possible
to determine whether any upward migration of salts 1s occurring. The
results should proride some indication of the rate and extent of upward
migration, if any, and the effect, if any, of soil depth and slope
exposure on salt migration.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
~.
