' Sady Plm~ Dm'gn
Post-reclamation Investigation
' The post-reclamation investigation will consist of the following tasks:
• The vegetation on the test plots will be sampled during the summer of 1992. Sampling
' will be repeated in the summer of 1993 and 1995. Cover and woody density sampling
will be performed in 1992. Cover, woody density, and production sampling will be
conducted in 1993 and 1995. A woody plant rooting depth study will also be conducted
in 1995. No studies are planned for 1994.
' • Cover sampling within plots will entail 5-10 systematically or randomly located 100 foot
transects with 5 systematically or randomly spaced 10 point frame placements per
transect. Woody density data will be estimated from 2 meter wide belt transects run
' along each cover transect. For production sampling, a minimum of 10 randomly located
one m~ quardrats per plot will be used. Sample adequacy will be set such that estimates
are within 10% of the true mean at the 90% level of statistical confidence.
' • Rooting depth of the major species of woody plants within the various plots will be
evaluated. A number of soil pits will be dug within each plot in the final year of the
' study and results of the evaluation will be included in the final report.
• The plant sample will be analyzed for selenium and boron content if the pre-reclamation
' investigation shows a high concentration of these elements in the refuse, topsoil or
subsoil.
' • The data gathered will be statistically evaluated and interpreted against the revegetation
success criteria established during the pre-reclamation investigation. The sagebrush-
wheatgrass reference area will be sampled during 1995 to provide input for establishment
of revegetation success criteria.
• Conclusions will be drawn as to the revegetation success with different test plots and for
' various cover depths.
Communication with Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology
A close communication will be maintained with DMG through this study. The Division's
' consent has been obtained regarding this plan of study. Information gathered from the pre-
reclamation investigation has been submitted for the Division's review. Decisions regarding
the topsoil/subsoil thickness have been made in concert with DMG. Results of periodical
' post-reclamation study will be submitted and comments will be sought.
