Appendix 1
Building Permit Application for Demolition, Southdown, inc.
Rowe Flats Mining and Reclamation Project
Page l of 2
WESTERN HISTORICAL STUDIES
MEMORANDUM
To: Mike Figgs, LREP
From: Steve Mehl
Date: November 15, 1994
RE: Dowe Flats Buildings
Mike:
At your request I visited the Brenner place on the north side of Colorado 66 and re-
visited the shed in Dowe Flats. The buildings of the Brenner place are near the
planned transportation corridor. The other shed was included in the original WHS
study area for the mine permit. The shed on the Valley floor has already been
determined not eligible by the Colorado SHPO and those recommendations tacitly
accepted by HPAB.
There are 5 buildings at the Brenner place. Building 1 is a vernacular, heavily
modified house. Originally built ca. 1910, the house has been extensively modified
since then. Modifications include a storm porch, a front addition with picture
windows, sandstone patio, rear wing to the root cellar; removal of original wood
siding, resheathing of house in foil-covered foam board, shingle siding. There may
have been some door/window changes in the 1950-60s remodeling. We didn't do
the interior so ['m not sure. We ace recommending the house is not eligible for
nomination to the NRHP.
Building 2 is the barn. This post frame barn was originally used for livestock
storage and is presently in very poor condition. The interior stalls and hayloft were
removed at a unknown date(s). The original roof was replaced an an unknown date
with corrugated metal sheets. Portions of the roof are showing signs of structural
failure. The cupola is collapsing and the overall integrity is minimal. We are
recommending the barn is not eligible for nomination to the NRHP.
