BANTA, Director
August 9, 1989
Mr. James Stover
Grand Mesa Coal Company
743 Horizon Court, Suite 205
Grand Junction, CO 81506
Re: Red Canyon Mine, File No. C-81-034 Annual Hydrology Report
Dear Mr. Stover:
Review of Table 5-88 of the Red Canyon annual hydrologic report illustrates
the drought conditions prevailing in the area of the Red Canyon Mine.
By September, 1988 wa ter levels in the alluvial wells were all lower than
the September averages indicating the possible influence of limited
precipitation and irrigation waters during the year.
No indication of refuse and spoil impacts upon the surrounding surface and
ground waters has been shown by the 1988 annual hydrologic report. Only
sample location R-1 and 3 showed pH's consistently in the acid range. Again
surface inspections and water sampling have not indicated any possible
impacts from these waters. NPDES reports show no discharges for the year.
Based upon this review, no impacts have been noted of adverse hydrologic
impacts from the Red Canyon permit site.
Sincerely,
J.
