.,. ,.
At present no plant is on the site. Consideration is still being given to replacing the asphalt plant
with a concrete batch plant. Before [hat can be done it may be necessary to amend the county approval
and perhaps alter the Reclamation Permit. Once a decision is made as to whether [his will be done,
examination of approval pathways will be made and appropriate approvals obtained.
The revegetation areas, except for the berm on the north side, are all occupied primarily by
grass species. The north berth has not only grass by also trees (primarily Pinyon Pine and a few
Fogleman Spruce). Most of the originally planted Ponderosa Pines died. It is interesting that the
Ponderosa died, even though it is a species common on lands not far from this location. But the
Fogleman Spruce, a species common in high altitude Sub-Alpine Forest, is doing well and even
producing seed. The Pinyon Pine, as expected, is doing well.
Within the revegetation areas are two small areas dominated by willow. The willow appears to
be Sandbar Willow (Salix exigaa). Mixed with the willow are a few cattails and a considerable amount
of moss on the ground. The small wet areas are present because of moisture seeps from the shallow
groundwater and low spots where runoff accumulates. They are highly restricted in extent and do not
appear to be enlarging in area.
Changes in adjacent land uses are occurring. Immediately north of the site a housing
development is in [he initial stages of construction. It is not known what impact this development will
have on the future of the operation. This is occurring on land that is not under the control of Schmidt
Construction Company. (See Photo 2.)
PHOTOGRAPHS:
Photo 1: During an inspection performed by DMG during the permit year it was required that
stored equipment be removed from its location. Some of this equipment was still useful while others
had outlived their usefulness. All equipment was removed from the site. This photograph shows it is no
longer present.
Photo 2: As noted above, land use changes near the site are becoming evident. This photograph
shows a new home being built just north of the betm on the north side of the operation. Although this is
the nearest home, others are being or have been built. A few other building sites are present near the
north boundary of the property. How this will affect future operations cannot be determined.
General: These two images are part of a 360 degree panorama taken from the top of an asphalt
pile within the site. The film, when developed by The Pro Lab in Denver, was scanned to a Consumer
CD-ROM from which these images were taken. These images are available on a single 3.5" floppy disk
in JPG format. This is a more convenient way to store monitoring images. The printing, although of far
less quality than would be produced by a photographic print, is good enough to show the general
features and even some fine detail. These images were produced by importing the JPG file into
CoreIDRAW! 4, labeled, and printed on an Epson Stylus 500 color inkjet printer at 720 dpi on clay
coated paper.
Vollmer Pit (M-83-038) Additional Sheets 5112/97 Annual Report Page 2 of 2
