Jerry H. Koblitz
November?2,1999
Page 3
5. PHC, Exhibit 10, page 9, second paragraph. The timing described in this paragraph does
not mention a time period during which porosity in the backfilled pit is being resatura[ed.
Please provide your calculation of that resaturation time. The Division believes it would be
reasonable to assume that the backfilled spoil has 15% porosity, and 25% of precipitation
infiltrates into the spoil. It is possible that water may also flow into the spoil from
underburden in an amount equal to the surface infiltration rate, as the USGS assumed at the
Seneca Mine.
6. PHC, Exhibit 10, page 3, first paragraph. Please provide the Division a copy of the
following reference: Piteau and Associates, 1982.
7. PHC, Exhibit 10, page 9, first paragraph. Please explain how hydraulic conductivity was
calculated to be 225 ft/day. Using the transmissivity of 130 gpd referenced on page 3, the
Division would calculate the hydraulic conductivity to be 0.35 feet per day, as follows:
transmissivity
Hydraulic
conductivity -
carrier 7.48 gall ft3
bed
thickness
130 gpd/ft~
50 ft 7.48 gaU ft~
0.35 ft/day
