b?r _ Dan Mzth ews
January 4, 1983
• P=_9e 3
l -
2. If mixing is not aec~ntable and sufficient. time allows,
additional samples vill be analyzed to determine the =_xter,t o{ the
sus'oect material_ If the material is determined to be localized, one
acre or less over one seam, no additional mea=ores will be undertaken.
3_ If mixing is pat acceptable and time does not allow for
additional analyses, or additional analyses shows greater than one
acre of unacceptable material, the material will-be hauled to a lower _-
dumn to ensure that the material will not be. placed in the rooting
zone of the regraded spoil.
4_ If suspect material is encountered on the regraded spoil,
additional sampling will be conducted to determine the extent of the
suspect material. If the area is greater than one acre, it will be
covered with at Least five feet of acceptable material_ Also, if this
situation is detected, Colowyo will further evaluate the suspect material
with respect to the plant species included in the reclamation plan,
to determine if a potential toxicity actually exists. Also, it could
be appropria'-e to plant only resistant species in the area if it is
relatively small.
• I trust that the above information will provide sufficient
clarity to Colowyo's overburden sampling program. Colowyo is pleased
to work with the Division to further advance our ability to characterize
overburdeh materials: If this program continues to show (as have past
overburden analyses and current reclamation success) that the Williams
Fork Formation in this area does not pose an; problems for mined land
reclamation, Colowyo will request a revision to or cessatioa of this
program.
If you have'any questions, please contact me.
Sincerely,
bcc= L_ B.
