CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS <br />The following conclusions are made based on information obtained during the soil and <br />;roundwater abatement activities. <br />1. Approximately 2,000 cubic yards of contaminated soil was excavated at the site and <br />' incorporated into asphalt pavement mix. <br />2. Approximately 83,000 gallons of groundwater/product mixture was pumped from the <br />' abatement excavation for off-site treatment and disposal. Approximately 450 gallons of <br />the 83,000-gallon mixture was free-phase product which was reportedly transported to <br />Mesa Oil for recycling. <br />' 3. An additional 20,000 gallons of groundwater was pumped from the excavation and is <br />currently being stored on site. That water will be used for dust suppression in the asphalt <br />' plant. <br />' 4. The TEPH concentrations observed in the West Wall North End, Bottom #1, South Wall <br />Middle, Class 7 Run and Stockpile soil samples exceeded the TPH Threshold standard. <br />The lateral extent of TEPH contamination in soil appears to be bracketed by abatement <br />' excavation contirmation samples or test pit samples. <br />5. The BTE`C and PAH concentrations observed in the soil samples analyzed from the site <br />' did not exceed the Tierl RBSLs. <br />6. The BTE~ concentrations observed in the groundwater samples collected from the <br />' dewatering trench and abatement excavation in Nfay 2001 did not exceed the MCLs. <br />The following recommendations are made based on information obtained during the soil and <br />' groundwater abatement activities. <br />1. Groundwater monitoring wells should be installed at the site to monitor groundwater <br />' quality at the site. <br />2. Water quality should be evaluated to obtain information regarding the need for additional <br />' groundwater remediation. <br />' 3. Impacted soil which may be encountered during future mining activities performed in the <br />spill area should be handled in accordance with Federal, State and local regulations. <br /> <br />
