In the Osgood reference area only 2 grass species were present at greater than 3% relative cover, and one of those
grass species was an undesirable annual species, Cheatgrass. Two forb species were present in the 2003 Osgood
reference area at greater than 3% relative cover. One shrub species was measured in the Osgood reference area in
2003, Sand sage. However, the relative cover of this shrub species exceeded that maximum 40% relative cover for
any one species. The operator provided spreadsheets with vegetation sampling and precipitation trends over ten
years, 1994-2003. These comparisons are useful and may provide CEC information for xe-evaluation of the
revegetation success standards.
The operator provided preliminary data fox vegetation sampled in the 1999 reclaimed area. Only two transects
were collected in the 1999 reclaimed area, but seven perennial species were recorded, with three warm season
grasses and one perennial forb present.
Even though fmal reclamation success standards are not yet achieved for the sampled reclaimed areas, the annual
monitoring indicates fairly diverse, productive communities becoming established. CEC continues to manage fox
weed control, and has tried several management techniques, burning, mowing, and limited interseeding (previous
to 2003), to improve the condition of the reclamation. The 2003 annual reclamation report is thorough and well
presented. One note regarding the annual "Vegetation/Re-vegetation Map; L-5", Area 29 has not been labeled on
this map. Since CEC has designated a numbering system fox the reclaimed areas, ensuring that the numbering is
shown on the annual map should assure consistency when referring to the reclaimed parcels.
