y ~ a ,
Division of Mining and Geology
Department of Natural Resources
January 13, 1993
Page 2
The ground water and surface water samples were collected according
to the procedures identified in the Protocols by Halepaska and
Associates, Inc. personnel during the period October 12 through
October 15, 1992. In addition, water samples were collected from
the five process points; upper and lower tailings impoundments,
collection pond, pre-detox and post-detox. These samples are
labelled accordingly on the attached analysis report. No samples
were obtained from the lysimeters, due to the absence of
collectible fluid in the lysimeters.
The samples were submitted for analyses of the water quality
parameters listed in Table 1. Sample handling and analyses
proceeded in accordance with the Protocols. A copy of the report
prepared by Core Laboratories is enclosed as Appendix A.
Field quality control was instituted with the collection of a field
duplicate, field blank and rinse blanks, to evaluate analytical and
sample handling techniques. The sample identified as M-24 is a
duplicate sample of M-4. The sample identified as FB is a field
blank consisting of on-site laboratory-provided de-ioni2ed,
distilled water. The samples identified as BFRB and BLRB are rinse
blanks of the barrel filter used in filtering field samples and the
bailer used in collecting ground water samples, respectively.
Surface water samples were collected at surface stations RS-1, RS-2
and RS-5. The other surface water stations were found to be dry or
have insufficient flow to collect samples. In addition, the lower
sediment sampler was removed from station RS-1 and submitted for
total suspended solids analyses. The sample is identified as RS-
1SS. Sediment samplers at the other surface water stations were
dry.
During the purging of well M-4, the discharge water progressively
became cloudy and turbid. This behavior is common to past sampling
events. During this sampling event, however, the water had a
chlorine-like odor, and the specific conductivity (1,524,µs/cm) and
pH (6.3) measurements were anomalous with past trends. Analysis
indicates that this sample has elevated levels of ammonia (3.76
mg/L) and chloride (G3 mg/L) over historical values.
With the exception of cadmium, the analyses from any of the other
surface and ground water samples do not indicate any anomalous
values. Core Laboratories has prefaced their analysis report with
a narrative indicating that several cadmium values (samples
collected at RS-1, RS-2, RS-5) had dissolved values that were
