Summary of Addendum to SAP -Montgomery Pit
A summary of the revised SAP and subsequent excavation and remediation is given below:
1 February Sampling
It is now planned that samples from the minus'/: inch road base pile will be obtained in February of
1999. The purpose of this sampling will be to build a correlation between the field-capable photo-
ionization detector (PID) and the laboratory analysis. In this way, PID readings can hopefully be used
to estimate Diesel, Dicamba, Bromacil and 2,4-D when the actual excavation and disposal is
conducted, which is planned for May of 1999. Samples of varying PID readings will be collected in
order to provide this correlation. A minimum of eight samples will be made overall, and some will be
l made deep into the minus 'h pile, in order to determine if material of higher concentration exists as
J compared to that already tested.
J These samples will be collected by shovel, carefully removing upper material from the pile without
mixing it with lower material. The exact location of the samples will be recorded by photos and by
tape measurements in order to continue to build information on the pile prior to excavation. The
1 depth of each sample will also be recorded. A plan view map of the pile with sample information will
J later be compiled and supplied to the Division prior to excavation. A front end loader may dig deep
into the pile after sampling to determine if there are any zones of higher concentration. Samples will
first be tested in the field using the PID. Portions of the same sample will be preserved for later lab
analysis.
l During the planned February 1999 sampling, water samples will also be taken in the Eagle River
upstream and downstream of the area of concern. A shallow auger hole will also be drilled to
groundwater between the original minus 3/4 inch road base pile and the Eagle River. Special care
will be taken in drilling this well to prevent any potential soil contamination from entering the
groundwater in the drill hole itself. A PVC pipe with a lower slotted section will be inserted into the
1 hole for the collection of the samples. Pure sand will be placed on the outside of the slotted section
and clay will be used to fill the remaining outside voids to the ground surface. Ground water is
1 expected to be encountered 5 to 10 feet from the surface.
1 As part of the February 1999 sampling, samples will also be made of the soil below the original
minus 3/4 inch road base stockpile. Three samples will be collected from a depth of 18 inches to 28
inches and held for laboratory analysis. Sample locations are shown on Figure 1.
Laboratory sampling of both liquid and solid media will consist of the tests and methods described at
1 the top of page 22 of the Dames and Moore SAP Report dated December 17, 1998.
