112d-3 Annual Report
Henderson Mine and Mill (Permit No. M-77-342) Page 2
the north. Another reclamation soil project will take place again this summer focused -
azound developing the southem long term storage azea. The new location for the southern
storage area, which was approved in TR-13, lies directly above the decant towers. Both
soil salvage and soil relocation activities will take place during the 2004 project.
Five reclamation test plots were constructed on 3-Dam. The test plots, each of which is
approximately 1.4 acres, cover the entire face of the dam, an area of approximately seven
acres. To promote the growth of grass seed that was spread on the plots, various
amendments were incorporated into the surface tailing. The specific quantities of these
amendments and topsoil aze specified in the included 3-Dam document. Henderson will
evaluate the progress of these test plots and use this information for long-term
reclamation planning.
The Henderson Mill continues to utilize three logging companies. One logger continues
to remove timber on the west side of the tailing impoundment to avoid trees being
inundated by ongoing milling activities. This logging effort will remove all timber
necessary for life of mine. Two other loggers continue to remove timber throughout the
property that has been impacted by the mountain pine beetle. The beetle infestation
continues at a record pace and we aze tazgeting 750 acres for logging in 2004. Henderson
logged 389 acres in 2003 removing beetle affected timber. 2004 will also start our
reforestation efforts with ground treatments (roller-chopping) in certain azeas and the
planting of around 18,000 seedlings along County Road 3. All forest activities are being
guided by our approved Forest Agriculture Plan with the Colorado State Forest Service.
For your reference, we have included 2003 groundwater monitoring data for the Mine and
Mill. Also included is the certification for the completion of the 2003 3-Dam seepwater
lines leak down test by Mill engineer, Mitch Lapp.
Please contact me at (303) 569-3221, ext. 1287 if I can be of further assistance.
Si~
Tony Lucero
Environmental Coordinator
Henderson Mine
cc: Anne Beierle, Henderson Mine
Erich Bower, Heriderson Mill
