4.0 Data Collection
4.1 Discontinuity Measurements
For the current (2007) geological structural evaluation of the quarry, LF&A
collected 18 discontinuity measurements to add to the existing structural geology
database. Data collected for this evaluation include the measurement of strike
and dip of the geologic discontinuities from the newly exposed rock faces in the
quarry, descriptions of the character of the discontinuities, and all of the data
collection point descriptions taken relative to generally measured wall locations.
Measurements were taken from the faces of advancing benches in both the
southern expansion area, and on the middle level of the quarry. A handheld
GPS was used to obtain wall location information and to identify where structural
data were collected from.
Minor mining activity has occurred in the main pit since the last report and no
additional data points during this study were collected from the main pit (Figure
2, Station 1; Photo 3). Figure 2 also shows the approximate locations of the
exposed wall that was available to us during this review and the temporary
station numbers where discontinuity measurements were collected during this
study.
Discontinuity measurements were obtained utilizing a Brunton compass both
indirectly by sighting along the discontinuity surface; and where deemed safe, by
direct measurement on the discontinuity surtace. Field inspection and data
collection occurred during the week of January 15-19, 2007 and did not interfere
with normal production mining activities.
A total of 18 discontinuity measurements were collected and added to the
measurements from previous years. When combined with data collected from
' previous annual reports (1997-2002, 2004-2006) and with borehole geophysical
data collected during the 2003 geotechnical investigation, a total of 2,978 strike
-7-
