Banta,
Division Deectar
I have reviewed your memo which proposes techniques to be used during
vegetation sampling this summer at the Sun Coal Company Meadows No. 1 Mine.
The Division requests the following changes:
1. Herbaceous Production: Harvested plant material should be
classified into at least the following four categories - annual
grasses, perennial grasses, annual forbs and perennial forbs.
2. Yegetation Cover: Cover transects should be at least 30 meters
long.
3. Woody Ptant Density: Sampling quadrats should be increased in
size on the reclaimed areas from the proposed 30 square meters.
It is the Division's opinion that sample adequacy will be more
difficult to achieve on the reclaimed areas with smaller sample
area sizes.
4. Number of samples: On revegetated areas, a minimum of 15 and a
maximum of 50 samples should be collected. The proposed 10
minimum/40 maximum number is acceptable for reference areas
sampling.
5. Statistical Comparison: A single-tail t-test should be used in
the comparison of cover, production and woody plant density
between revegetated and reference areas.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely
~~~~~
Matthew S.
