• 4.0 SEEP AND SPRING INFORMATION
Spring monitoring points SP-8 through SP-9 are monitored and the results compared with
baseline and historic monitoring data. A significant change in the quality or quantity of flow
from these springs and seeps after retreat mining might indicate that the mine might be impacting
these water resources.
The data collected from Oxbow's groundwater monitoring stations, along with the results of
laboratory analyses are presented in Exhibit 2 -Groundwater Information
SPr1nQ SP-8
Based on the quality and location of Spring 8, it was determined that the source of the spring was
the abandoned Oliver Mine. Until 1999, flows from this spring were been relatively consistent.
No flows were recorded during any of the 2001 and 2002 monitoring events. Oxbow will never
be able to inspect the water-filled and now sealed areas of the Sanborn Creek Mine longwall
panels involved during the 1999 mine fire event. Based solely upon coincidence, Oxbow
believes that water from the Oliver Mine may have drained into the Sanboe Creek mine at that
time, as no flow from Spring 8 has since been recorded.
Spring SP-9
• Spring 9 is a seep at the base of a landslide feature in the Unnamed Gulch. Historically, flow
had been nearly continual, but at very low rates. The source of the spring appears to be a
shallow perched water zone discharging from the toe of a surface slide feature. During 2002 the
spring did not flow.
•
