,:,
Mr. David Berry Page 2
Apri110, 1998
program will be evaluated to determine the improvements needed to ensure that the
monitoring program will monitor potential impacts from mining. Dr. Mayo has done
similar evaluations for coal mines in Utah, and MCC believes his experience and
expertise will be beneficial. MCC understands that the Division agrees with the
concept of this proposal, but that additional details are needed. As Dr. Mayo and
MCC establish the specifics of this evaluation project, we will share these with the
Division. MCC is interested in the Division's opinion of our progress, as we will
invest a great deal of time, effort, and money into this evaluation and would like to
consider the Division's expectations before and during the evaluation. We expect
that Dr. Mayo's recommendations would take effect, following approval from the
Division, in the 2000 water year.
As Dr. Mayo's evaluation is a long-term goal, we understand that some immediate
improvements to the monitoring program are warranted. MCC will provide the
Division with a technical revision to accompany, or soon follow, the submittal of the
1997 AHR to delete and/or replace monitoring sites that are damaged or destroyed.
This request was provided as part of the recently submitted Box Canyon Permit
Revision (PR#08) application, but MCC will re-submit a more complete evaluation
and discussion of the proposed changes to the monitoring program in a technical
revision application.
MCC extends an invitation to the Division to spend a day with us in the field to
collect data from sites currently in the monitoring program. As most sites are easily
accessible in the June monitoring period, we suggest a day in June if your schedule
will allow.
Again, MCC appreciated the opportunity to discuss the hydrology monitoring
program with you, and looks forward to maintaining the dialogue to continually
improve MCC's program. Please call if you have any questions.
Si c rely,
Christine E.
