Electrical conductivity (EC) levels remained consistent in all wells from the prior water <br />year. Total dissolved solids (TDS) levels in all groundwater monitoring wells attenuated <br />from prior water years during the 1999 water year. Well 17-B TDS levels dropped <br />slightly during the beginning of the water yeaz and rose slightly in the spring. TDS levels <br />in well 94-1 remained consistent during the 1999 water year at their lowest levels in the <br />past five water years. In we1195-1, TDS levels rose slightly at the beginning of this water <br />year and then decreased to then lowest levels in the past five water years. <br />All the monitoring wells showed some fluctuation in ionic concentrations this water year. <br />The majority of the fluctuations were within historic ranges observed for the wells over <br />the last five water years. Notable changes are fiu-ther described below. <br />Concentrations of ammonium, bicarbonate, iron, magnesium, sodium, and sulfate <br />remained within historical ranges this water year in well 17-B. An increase in calcium and <br />manganese was noted during the second calendar quarter of this water year. A decrease in <br />chloride levels to detection limits was noted during both sampling events for well 17-B <br />this water year. <br />Fluctuations in concentrations of ammonia, calcium, 'von, magnesium, and sodium <br />occurred within historic values in well 94-1. Increases in concentrations of bicarbonate <br />and manganese were noted at this well this water year. Decreases in chloride and sulfate <br />concentrations occurred during both sampling events this water year at well 94-1. <br />Ammonium, bicarbonate, calcium, and sulfate concentrations decreased in we1195-1 to the <br />lowest levels noted during the last five water years. During the second calendar quarter of <br />this water year, chloride and manganese concentrations in well 95-1 increased <br />significantly. Concentrations of iron, magnesium, sodium, and sulfate remained within <br />historical observed ranges for we1195-1. <br />It is noted that the detection levels for manganese were lowered from 0.2 mg/I to 0.01 <br />mg/1 during this water year which accounts for the apparent rise in manganese levels. The <br />rise is not significant and is an artifact of laboratory procedures changing during the <br />recording period for the wells. Detection limits have also been reduced for cadmium, total <br />phosphate, selenium, and zinc, however none of these constituents have appeared in the <br />wells at or above the detection limits, therefore they are not specifically discussed in the <br />annual hydrologic report text. <br />Many of the trace elements found to be below the detection limits for the springs sampled <br />were also found to be below detection limits for the wells sampled. These trace elements <br />are arsenic, cadmium, mercury, nitrite, nitrate, nitrate/nitrite, selenium, and zinc. Other <br />trace elements found at detectable limits are consistent within each well at levels that do <br />not indicate high or low fluctuations of these elements. Overall, elements that are <br />detectable and those that are not have been consistent throughout the groundwater well <br />monitoring program at the Carbon Junction Mine. <br />-6- <br />
