Snowpack in 1995 prevented an accurate count for baseline comparison.
**Survival based on original number of individual plants per transect.
Location: Planting Unit 95-4 is divided"into two sepazate units as part of an ongoing study. Planting Unit 95-4A is, on the non-
topsoiled portion of the study site., The baseline runs along the west border of the site (Bo, B40) with endpoints at metal posts marked
with aluminum tags. Transects are perpendiculaz and located at 3, 10, 14, 18, 20, 24, 30, 32; 36, and 44 meters. Endpoints of the
transects are mazked with wooden stakes.
Herbaceous Cover: Grass = 0.0 % coverage. Forb = 3.4 %-coverage'.- Minor"amounts of herbaceous cover exist on the site. Noted
was Thistle (Cirsium arvense) which presents a potential future weed problem.
Comments: The overall survival rate remained relatively unchanged at 87% and 85% between 1996 and 1997 respectively.
Gambel's Oak survival exceeded 100% which resulted from the resprouting of individual plants previously noted as dead. Several
large thistle were observed growing throughout the plot which is a noticeable increase from 1996.. Several shrub seedlings were
covered and crowded by thistle. The impact of plant competition caused by the thistle versus the protective benefit received by shrubs
from browsing is unknown. Several plants were buried by sediment running off of the slopes.
10
• •
