COLOWYO COAL COMPANY L.P.
1999 HERBACEOUS COVER/ WOODY PLANT MONITORING INFORMATION
1995, 1997 RECLAIMED AREAS
LOCATION: Colowyo Coal Co., L. P. Meeker CO
YEAR OF RECLAIMED AREAS SAMPLED: 1995. 1997
SAMPLERS: L. VanAmburg, V. Williams
HERBACEOUS COVER
Herbaceous cover data for 1999 was collected using the Point Frame sampling
method on the reclaimed areas listed above. Procedures for using this method include
randomly selecting five points along a 100-foot transect. At each randomly selected
location, a point frame is placed perpendicular to the transect at a 45-degree angle.
The point frame is divided into ten equal sections that allow a pin to be slid down the 45-
degree angle until the pin hits an object. Each first hit is recorded either by vegetative
species, litter, rock, or bare ground.
Due to differences in elevation, climate, and other environmental factors, sample
areas were first divided into three sections: East Pit, West Pit, and Section 16.
Throughout each of the three areas, five transects were first taken on both the 1995 and
1997 reclaimed areas resulting in an initial 25 sample points (N) per reclaimed area. To
determine whether or not adequate sampling had been done, the sample adequacy was
calculated for each area using the following formula:
N=tzsZ
(dax)z
Where: N =required number of transects
d =desired level of precision (0.1 the level of precision for estimate
of the mean to be within 10% of the actual mean).
z =sample mean
sz =sample variance
t =the ; _ .05 t-table value for a two tailed t-test with n-1 degrees of
freedom.
