Douglas County -Water Inf'ormeti°n http://www.douglas.w.us/DC/Waterinfo.htm
entities' available water supplies. However, the water supplies presented herein include
tributary water rights that may not represent a firm yield, and total annual yield may be
significantly less than the volume presented.
The majority of water supplies available to these water providers is nontributary
groundwater underlying the providers' service azea. Adjudicated groundwater in the
Dawson, Denver, Arapahoe and Laramie Fox Hills formations amounts to 102,612
acre-feet. Another 12,400 acre-feet is available but not yet adjudicated. This supply, while
reliable and long term in most azeas, is anon-renewing resource and its use should be
conserved wherever possible.
All the water providers are sensitive to water conservation measures. All surface and
groundwater providers have implemented reuse and/or augmentation plans to maximize use
of their water supplies. Most water providers have increasing block rates to penalize higher
use and encourage xeriscape landscaping to reduce irrigation demands. In addition, several
of the water providers require water conserving plumbing fixtures and they conduct leak
detection programs.
In 1995, Centennial Water and Sanitation District, which serves Highlands Ranch, provided
7,200 acre-feet of water to its customers. 5,860 acre-feet, or just over of 80% of this water
was from renewable water supplies (surface water). In 1996, of the 10,000 acre-feet of
water supplied by Centennial, 9,000 acre-feet, or 90%, was from surface water supplies.
• Available Information:
An informational video, Douglas County Water Supply Issues (1997) (author/publisher: John C.
Halepaska and Associates and Douglas County Planning Conunission) is available at all Douglas
County public libraries.
DCWRA
100 Third Street
Castle Rock, CO 80 ] 04
Phone: (303)660-7401
Fax: (303) 688-1293
•
3 of3 9/15/00 8:14 AM
