STATE OF COLORADO
Roy Romer, Governor
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
MINED LAND RECLAMATION DIVISION
DAVID C. SHELTON, Dlreetor
DATE: July 22, 1987
T0: Jeff Deckler
FROM: Candy Thompson
RE: GRASSY GAP - FILE N0. C-81-039 - ANNUAL HYDROLOGIC REPORT
A review of the AHR identified the following problems.
1. The twice a year sampling; should coincide with at least two different
seasons: As winter access is difficult, I would suggest a June and
October sampling. The June sampling could be done at the same time as the
spring and seep survey.
2. The spring and seep survey was done in October. Springs normally have
highest flow in the months of June and July and should be surveyed during
this time frame.
3. In May of 1987, the Division sampled the Pit 2 well. There was
approximately 1.5 feet of water in the well. The analysis results are
enclosed. The water in the well was very muddy. Filtering of the sample
prior to acidification is essential to obtain proper analysis results.
4. The June 30, 1986 sample results for Site 2 gives a TDS of 16,906 mg/l,
8y calculation, the TDS is 683. The laboratory (ACZ) has been notified of
their error.
5. The analyses of the Pit #5 and #6 pond shows the water to be of relatively
high TDS ( 1000mg/1 ). The major constituent of the water is sulfate.
This is also true ~ the sites draining the undisturbed areas although the
concentrations of~~and sulfate are much lower. During October 1986, SW-4,
the most downstream sample site, had a TDS of 1004 mg/1. This is higher
than previously noted at the site. In TR-2, the Division allowed the
reduction of surface water sampling to this one site during inactive
status. Due to the elevated level of TDS noted at this site, the Division
is of the opinion that site SW-3 should be sampled in the future on the
same date as SW-4 to give a comparison with a relatively undisturbed
site. The operator, is in agreement, should file a revised technical
revision reinstating this site. If the operator disagrees, information
must be submitted to the Division to show why the comparison data is not
required.
/1 al
1272'=
a23 Centennial Building, 1373 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203-2273 Tel.
