Figures 1 and 2 illustrate the location of the reference and reclaimed areas and
sample point locations for each azea sampled.
A quantitative evaluation of revegetation success was undertaken this year in the 1998
reseeded or interseeded azeas, the 1999, 2000, and 2002 reclamation areas. The 1985, 1986,
and 1987 azeas were previously monitored (1994-1998) and after successfully meeting
revegetation success criteria, were released from the Phase R liability requirements by the
Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology August 11, 1998. This year, qualitative
evaluation of these azeas included estimating vegetative cover, herbaceous production, and
identifying the dominant plant species. Any locations or trends in vegetation development
that required attention were also noted. The 1995 and 1997 areas were previously monitored
(1998-2004) and after successfiilly meeting revegetation success standazds a Phase II bond
release application was submitted on July 1, 2005 and is currently under review by CDMG.
The 1995 and 1997 reclamation azeas were qualitatively evaluated this growing season.
The Osgood sand reference area was measured and mapped in the field in 1994 by Savage
and Savage staff, and this scaled drawing of the reference area was used. On the scaled
drawing, a Cartesian coordinate grid (50x50 feet) was established. Computer generated
random numbers were used to establish a pool of x,y coordinates. Ten vegetation cover and
fifteen herbaceous production sample locations were randomly established for the reference
azea. Sample sites were located in the field through compass triangulation and pacing from
known landmazks.
2.2 FIELD SAMPLING
2.2.1 Timing
Field investigation was undertaken during the period August 8 through August 16, 2005.
This time period coincided with anthesis and maximum development of the majority of plant
species found in both the native vegetation community (Osgood sand reference area) and the
reclaimed azeas at the mine site to be evaluated. Total annual precipitation at the mine in
calendar yeaz 2005 was considered average with 13.14 inches; however precipitation was
below average during critical times throughout the growing season.
