This was bec.tuse of the large
quantity of material that was available within areas that had previously been prepared for mining. The
land on the north side of the affected land which was opened in 1999 was mined to a large extent.
Mining on the south side of the operation where mining has been done the last few years has essentially
been completed, but mining on the floor of the quarry below that south side is continuing. The
completed mining areas on the south side are being prepared for final reclamation.
Annual Report Maps: The enclosed color map shows the primary areas of disturbann~ and the type of
disturbance occurring in each area. This map is only slightly changed from last year
Affected Lands: The amount of affected land increased very little from last year.
Revegetation: The site is stable and is not subject to erosion. No revegetation was done in 2001 as no
land was available to revegetate. However, the south side benches that have been completed are being
prepared for revegetation.
Expected Activity (2001): The mining zone (orange on the map) will continue to expand northward
into the brown area. An additional zone of stripping into Settion 31 and west of the current operation is
shown on the map. This stripping is necessary to efficiently remove the materials in the land previously
stripped in the southwestern comer of the affected land. Because the ridge in this come:• forms a unit for
mining, the stripping must be done west of this area so mined land is not created immeciiately adjacent
to unstripped land. If that condi[ion was created it would be nearly impossible to safely remove
vegetation and soils from new mining areas and soil resources would very likely be lost. In the 2000
annual report it was indicated that this land would be stripped in 2001, but that did not occur as
expansion in tha[ direction was not necessary.
Bonding: This operation is covered by a self bond. During the last year, a bonding pr~~blem discovered
by the Division was corrected and a succession of operator was approved to change the operator from
Centennial Materials to Schmidt Construction Company. Enclosed is a copy of the mo>t current
Divisional Balance Sheet for Schmidt Construction. Schmidt Construction is a subsidiary of Edw.
