*,TR9AN USES 0° T:~ SO1T_S
TTrbanization in the Boulder Area has been increasing in
the past few •~ears. This increase is due to the near-
ness of the Area to the Denver metropolitan eras; to the
establishment of various in~'ustrial and governmental
installations in or near the Area; and to the establish-
ment of a large academic co~rmunity created by the
Jniversit;~ of Colorado at ~oulder. This availabilit;~
of e:cplo?-sent opportunities psrtl_r accounts for the
increase in population. Cood roads, a broad spectrum
of cultural and outdoor recreation facilities, the
favorable climate, and the mo~rntsins surroun~'ing also
contribute toward making is 3oul~ler area s desirable
place to lire.
this section is meant to coint out the differences and
li:~itations for urban use of soils. These interore-
tetions are generalized and s::ould be used primarily
in planning :yore detailed ir,•restications that determi:ae
the characteristics of the soil ^aterisl in place st
the orocosed site.
Limitations of the soils for urban uses.
In the °ollowing tale, *.'r.s soils of the :?oulder Brea
ere rated according to their limitation for septic tan'•t
• absorption fields, sewage la:oons, shallow excavations,
dwelliacs without ~ssements, local rows and streets,
end sanltar~- wand:ill. ^he estlmated interpretations
in this table are based on the en3ineering properties
of soils shown in *.he ta'~le, Estimated Soil °ropertie:3
Si~ni°icant in ~~ineerinP, on test data for soils in
sur•/e•• areas nearb•- or adjoining, end on the experien<:e
of engineers and soil scientists of the 3oulder Area.
foil limitations are indicated be the ratings slight,
mo~'erate, end se•rere. flit?:t mans soil properties
genersll~• `s-rorsble for t`:e rated use, or in other
words, limitations that are minor end essil? overcome.
:Moderate means that some soil properties are unfavor-
able, but can be o•ercome or modified bTr special plan-
ning and design. Severe means soil properties so un-
favorably and so difficult to correct or overcome as
to require major soil reclamation, special design,
or intensive maintenance. ~Jnless otherwise stated the
ratings in this table apply onlp to s depth of about
feet, and therefore limitation ratings of slight or
moderate may not be valid if trenches are to be deeper.
°ollowing are explanations of the columns in this table.
i
~,~„~ ,.rip' ~~. =~; -- - - ryrr.:..ns~.i~i:~®~~i~i~!' ~d~G' _
