QUARTERLY REPORT
OCTOBER 1984 THROUGH DECEMBER 1984
WEST ELK COAL COMPANY
SCOPE:
J The following is a summary of baseline hydrologic data collected
during the period of October through December, 1984.
The work accomplished during this period consisted of the
1 maintenance and upkeep of eight (8) continuous streamflow gaging
stations, static water level measurements on eighteen (18) ground
water wells, and precipitation data collected from the manual
precipitation gage near the Horse Creek flume. The data obtained
l during the quarter and for the calender year are summarized in
i Tables 1 through 27.
HYDROLOGY:
The hydrology monitoring program was modified at the beginning of
the mid-year quarter to conform with modifications specified in a
CMLRD memo from Roy Cox to Bob Liddle dated August 12, 1983, and
with conclusions reached and stated in Watec's monitoring report
dated February 13, 1984.
Surface 'dater Monitoring - Streams
The eight continuous flow monitoring stations were visited at
least monthly during the calender year 1984. Flow records and
staff gage readings were collected from the recorders, and on the
spot remedial work was performed~as might be required to continue
' obtaining accurate records. The were records unavoidably lost to
equipment failure, high runoff damage (see especially Lick and
Minnesota creek records), and beaver activity.
' Prior to the end of the calender year the Minnesota Creek flume
had been cleared of debris, and its backfill replaced with larger
stone in preparation for Spring runoff. The Lick Creek flume had
' been reset in the channel and completely backfilled. The beaver
problem at Upper Dry Fork Minnesota Creek remains.
Flow measurements are presented in Tables 1 through 8.
-83-
