Canany
Division Director
Natural Resource Tmstee
I have completed review of the 2005 Annual Hydrology Reports (AHR) for the Roadside Mine,
#C-1981-041. Reporting included monitoring results for surface water level and quality, ground
water level and quality, mine water discharge, and springs and seeps.
Monitoring Freguency
The monitoring frequency was met in accordance with the approved plan during 2005. One
problem was noted in the presentation of the monitoring frequency requirement for Coal and
Jerry Creeks. On page 18-1 of Tab 18 of the approved permit, text states the monitoring
requirement is quarterly. On page 18-3 of the same Tab, the frequency is described as
instantaneous monthly flow. This should probably be corrected to be consistent at the next
opportunity through revision to the permit.
Surface Water Quantity and Quality
No pond discharges occurred during 2005. WET testing indicates no problem regarding toxicity
of the mine water discharge. Mine water discharge to the Colorado River increases the salinity
of the river by only .13% and does not affect current uses.
Ground Water Quantity and Quality
Levels in piezometers indicate static conditions, with all piezometers returning water levels below
the critical depth. Alluvial wells show seasonal variation as expected with nothing unusual
noted. One odd increase in the total dissolved solids (TDS) concentration was noted in well
Rollins 2. TDS increased about 74% in 2005, from a consistent 1700 mg/I up to nearly 2970
mg/I. Continued monitoring should indicate if this is the start of a trend.
Saring and Seep Survey
Tab 18 indicates spring and seep monitoring is to be conducted in March or April of each year.
In 2005, monitoring was conducted in early May. Many of the previous years have also been
monitored in the month of May. This is an excursion from the approved plan. Please have the
operator explain.
Summary
Generally, the mine did an excellent job of completing monitoring in accordance with the
approved plan. The mine appears to have little consequence to the surface and ground water
regime in and near the mine site. Let me know if you have any questions.
Office of Office of Colorado
Mined Land Reclamation Active and Inactive Mines Geological Survey
