1993 Pt~oduCtion and Geologic conditions
• Cyprus Orchard Valley Coal Corporation (COVCC) prochrced approximately 1,145,000
tons of coal frwn the Orchard Valley West Mine in 1993 under Federal Coal Leases
C-37210, COC-53356, and C-25079. Production was sustained throughout the twelve
months congrrisirrg calerxlar year 1993.
Mining at the Orchard Valley West Mine during 1993 entailed panel advance
development, partial extraction of floor coal, aryl full pillar retreat extraction
opetations. Panel Z develcgnent occurred in crosscuts 2 through 7 during January
aryl February, 1993. Panel C development, initiated in 1992, was cong~leted by
the end of January 1993. Subsequent partial extraction of floor coal retreat
mining in Panel C was oa~grleted by the end of April, 1993. Panel Y development
was renewed fran crosscut 3 in February, 1993. Development continued throughout
the remainder of the year aryl was extended throtx~r crosscut 54 at the close of
the year. Development mining of the North Mains Bypass, connecting the Orchard
Valley Fast arri West mines, oonanenced in May, 1993. 'This corursr-lion was
cottq~letarl in June, 1993. Following completion of the North Mains Bypass,
development mining shifted to the II West Sulinains which were extended fr®n
crosscut 43 through crosscut 49. These crosscuts were renumbered after the East
and West mines were connected and the westerrmast development of the II West
Slrkmains is now referred to as crosscut 101. The II West SUtmain development was
ccmq~leted in July, 1993 and Panel AA was initiated. Panel AA development was
prematurely terminated in August, 1993 and retreat mining operations in this
panel were initiated. Poor roof wrrditions and a series of roof falls at the
western terminus of the II West Slilanains combined to force the premature
• withdrawal of mining operations from Panel AA. Pillar retreat mining of Panel
AA was completed in September, 1993. Development mining then shifted back to
Panel Z at crosscut 7 and was continued and extended to crosscut 21 by the close
of 1993.
Panel C:
Mined Length: Approximately 250 of panel advance development to crosscut 26.
Approximately 2900 feet of partial floor removal upon retreat
from panel. No pillar extraction conducted in Panel C to
prevent sukxsidence (see TR-19).
Overburden `Ihicamess: Varying from approximately 300 to 900 feet.
Minim Height: 9-11 feet on advance. 18 feet maxiiman on retreat in partial
extraction areas.
Roof: Comprised of mudstones tending to air slack. Top coal of 2-3 feet in
thickness was left on the roof to prevent problems associated with this
strata type.
Ribs: Rib sloughage was ro;ni,,,al with ribs standing very well.
Floor: The lower "D" seam was used as floor which provided competent corx3itions.
Anomalous Conditions: Shall seeps from both roof and floor sources were
• encountered throughout development of the section.
1
