January /995 Kerr Coal Company ' 1994 Annual Hydrology Report • /2
4.0 MINE AREA ALLUVIAL GROUND WATER
Water level measurements were to be collected from alluvial well AO-2 on a monthly basis
during the year and water samples taken in October and April. This well is located in Bush
Draw, downstream (east) of the northern extent of Pit 1. No sample could be collected in
October 1992 because the well was dry (probably silted in). Kerr, in response to their
commitment, replaced Well AO-2 in January 1993 and continued monitoring and sampling this
well on the schedule approved. The well was replaced with AO-2A adjacent to the original
location and was completed to a depth of 14 feet.
Table 1, 1994 Ground Water Statistic, presents the water quality summary for the year. The
mean field pazameter values and analyses parameter values for the past five years are presented
in Table 5, Historic Mine Area Alluvial Water Quality Data. The individual analyses of samples
collected are presented in Exhibit D, 1994 Mine Area Alluvial Water Quality Analyses.
Comparison of values over the past years have shown that alluvial ground water demonstrates
more variability in water quality than the overburden ground water; however no definite trends
are evident. The variability in water quality parameters is probably influenced by seasonal and
year to yeaz variations in precipitation, and the variation from year to year in the number of
samples collected. In October 1992 as in 1991, low water levels and the silted condition of AO-
2 resulted in no samples collected, but the replacement of this well in January 1993 renewed the
ability to monitor on a consistent basis. Figure 5, EC vs TDS Well AO-2(A), shows the levels
and relationship between electrical conductance and total dissolved solids. Due to the silted
condition of the original well, there is limited data to compare at this time, but will improve
with the addition of data.
s,i __ ~,.,y,~,p TerraMatrix Int. "P.O.
