This Year's mean daily flow values for the Cottonwood and Rapid Creek flumes are
' included on data pages SG-23, SH-23, SI-23 and SK-9 and are presented graphically on
data pages SG-24, SH-24, SI -24 and SK-10. As usual, the flow in these Creeks is largely
controlled by the City of Palisade, depending upon their need for domestic water. Also,
' inrigation water is diverted from the creeks by private water right holders at various
locations. Table S98-1 was prepared to show the average monthly flows during the
primary irrigation season when low flow in the creeks is critical. There are significant gaps
in the collection of data from these locations. Because of the changes in mine personnel,
1 it is unknown if the data was not collected or if the data has been lost. The water sampling
field book shows that the locations were checked on the following dates but no recorder
charts could be located. Some gaps may be due to problems with the recorder or flows
below the minimum recording level of the recorder. Minimum recording levels of the
flumes are listed at the bottom of Table S98-1.
SWGS-1 SWGS -2 SWGS- 3 SWGS -5
DATE Flow (H)
' 5-3-97 0.60 0.73 1.39 0.58
5-31.98 1.26 inaccessible
8.2.98 0.28 0.46 0.48 0.44
'-~ 8-30-98 0.26 0.26. 0.29 0.25
9-20-98 0.28 0.26 0.24 0.22
' The crest stage gages installed in Coal Canyon drainage and Jerry Creek in 1996 were
' destroyed by a storm in the summer of 1998. SWGS-06 is located downstream on Coal
Canyon near the proposed CRDA-3 refuse pile. SWGS-07 is upstream on Coal Canyon
near the south boundary line of the permit area. SWGS-08 is located downstream on
' Jerry Creek near our Unit Train Loadout. SWGS-09 is located upstream on Jerry Creek
below it's confluence with Spring Creek. These monitoring locations are shown on the
' Hydrologic Monitoring Location Map. The sites are monitored approximately once a month
for instantaneous flow at the time of monitoring and peak flow since the last time
'. monitored. The sites were located in late 1995 but the actual gages were not installed until
August and September 1996 due to access problems with BLM. Access is sometimes
restricted by weather, BLM restricts access when the roads are muddy. Data taken during
the Year are listed on data pages SR-1 for Coal Canyon and SS-1 for Jerry Creek.
Dunng the upcoming year, Powderhorn will be conferring with the Division to determine
the future of the monitoring stations in Coal and Jerry Creek.
aMR 98 Page 2 5-1-99
