IViemo to Joe Dudash
Bowie #2 Waste Pile Stability Analysis (NOV CV-99-004)
page 2
organic topsoil removed and the exposed surface of the natural foundation support soil materials
benched prior to the placement of the GOB material." A schematic rendition of Lambert &
Associates' "Toe Key, Bench Concept" is depicted and annotated in detail on Figure 7 of their
report. The design includes the depiction of bench configuration and the specification of the
installation of lateral drains within the groin of excavated benches. These drains should be tied
into the axial underdrains extended beneath the pile. I believe this rendition represents
significant new design detail not previously included within the Bowie #2 Mine permit
application.
With the recognition and acceptance of these two conditions, as referenced by Lambert &
Associates, I find the stability to be appropriately prepared and recommend it's acceptance to the
Division. I recommend that the Division specify within the approval of [his Technical Revision
that these two conditions be strictly adhered with by the operator during construction of the
Bowie No. 2 pile.
cc: Larry Routten
doc: M:\COALVAP\Bow2Gob4.WPD
JPf P
