s •
February 3, 1983
Mr. Joseph G. Zalkind
Page 4
r
There is~a possibility that later on some small businesses are going
to be developed there.
Total reclamation amounted Lo less than two acres.
SUD'LM.4RY AND APPRAISAL OF RECLAMATION EFFORTS
lde believe that our reclamation efforts so far have been very successful.
Almost all of the ban Y. areas that have been sloped and topped out base
numerous forms of vegetation growing on them with a minimum of cost.
The rainbow trout that were stor_ked in the gravel pit initially, have
grown from two to Pour inches in length t.o about 17 inches long now.
Additionally, a i'ew other vari~=ties of small minnows have appeared,
providing the trout ,,-ith a very good source of food.
Each year there has been an increase of different varieties of waterfowl,
and other birds.
.4s the body of water has grown, we have also seen more Canadian geese
using the pit and more nesting occuring on ad~iacent areas.
In effect, we are not only accomplishing our reclamation goals, but,
are creating an ecosystem that did not exist before.
Also, the recreational possibilities of this area are becoming more
apparent. lJe have created an excellent fishing area, and even though we have
not opened it to the public, we let our employees and families use it on
weekends.
In summary, we believe that our reclamation efforts have been successful
and will continue to be. 41e also believe that reclaiming mining areas is a
very beneficial and positive thing to do.
It should be said however, that the positive feelings in regards to
reclamation, that the people with permitted gravel pits might have, are
almost completely negated by the operator down the road (who is also your
competitor) who has not, or does not ever intend to, get his pit permitted.
Sincerely,
Pd4THIAS COPICRETE, IPIC.
~~~.:
Thomas G.
