Battle Mountain Resources, Inc.
' 06 July 1993
Page 3

~ ,
1

LJ
1

t

1

2.0 FIELD INVESTIGATION
2.1 General
The evaluation of various geotechnical parameters involved
piezocone penetration testing (PCPT) including the evaluation
of excess pore pressure dissipation.
2.2 Piezocone Penetration Testing
Six PCPT soundings were conducted at the site. The PCPT
equipment utilizes a pore pressure probe which measures the
excess pore pressure generated during penetration. Tile decay
of this excess pressure is related to the coefficient of
permeability.
The proposed PCPT locations were determined in the field by
a BMGC representative. Two access ramps were constructed on
the tailings with three soundings on both the north and south
ramps. The PCPT data is summarized as follows:
Ramp Sounding No. Total Depth
North PCPT N-01 58.73 ft
North PCPT N-02 40.86 ft
North PCPT N-03 21.65 ft
South PCPT 5-01 50.03 ft
South PCPT 5-02 34.78 ft
South PCPT 5-03 21.16 ft
Soundings were conducted using a track-mounted elecrtronic
unit. One of the advantages of the cone penetrometer is the
speed of operation which permits stratigraphic evaluation of
the tailings quickly and economically. Another advantage
is the continuous penetration record which permits the
identification of thin strata which could influence the qeo-
technical conditions in the area. These thin strata can
easily be missed by conventional drilling and sampling
techniques.
The entire system was mounted in a rugged mobile truck which
contained the system components including the data proc@ssing
equipment. The cone was hydraulically pushed into the
tailings and a continuous record of tip resistance (Qc),
TERRA TECHNOLOGIES -SOUTHWEST, INC.
