•
area possessing the potential for eligibility to the National Register
and threatened with potential impacts by mining operations. This threat
was perceived to be the long-range threat of subsidence. This set of
considerations as tied to Special Condition No. 3 together triggered the
first step in the contingency plan for mitigation efforts directed
towards 5DT700.
The first step and that already triggered is simply to ascertain if
the rock shelter is indeed a cultural resource worthy of its designation
as 5DT700 and if it really is, as suspected, eligible for inclusion on
the National Register of Historic Places and therefore in need of
mitigation efforts prior to threat from subsidence.
The second step would be triggered by the results of step one.
This would involve either development of a formal mitigation plan based
on the findings of the first step effort or, in the event of negative
results in Step 1, abandonment of plans for mitigation and/or taking
away the features provisioned status as a cultural resource and
returning its number to the site number pool for reuse on another site
in Delta County.
-6-
