December 23, ! 999 Pcrge 2~
• 5.0 QUALITY ASSURANCE/QUALITY CONTROL (QA/QC)
Water quality laboratory analyses will be conducted in accordance with a plan approved by
the BLM. A State of Colorado-certified laboratory will be used for all groundwater and surface
water quality analyses for all designated sites and frequencies specified in this plan. American
Soda will use the USGS analytical laboratory, preferentially, to perform annual third-party
validation of water quality data. American Soda's full-time environmental coordinator will assure
adherence to the QA/QC plan. Water quality sampling conducted by the USGS will be done
according to USGS protocols and not necessarily those used by American Soda.
5.1 Groundwater Sampling Methods
Groundwater sampling will be performed in accordance with the standard operating
procedures (SOP) developed for the site. The SOP for groundwater sampling is included as
Appendix C and provides detailed instructions on the following topics:
• Equipment
• Instrument calibration
• Well purging
• Sample collection
• Sample filtration
• Field QA/QC procedures
The wells are equipped with dedicated sampling equipment. In the event dedicated
equipment is inoperable, clean, decontaminated equipment will be used for all sampling activities.
Decontamination will be performed in accordance with the procedures given in Appendix D-
Standard Operating Procedure for Equipment Decontamination.
5.2 Calibration Procedures and Frequency
All instruments and equipment used during sampling and analysis will be operated,
calibrated, and maintained according to the manufacturer's guidelines and recommendations, as
well as criteria set forth in the applicable analytical methodology references. Calibration,
operation, and maintenance will be performed by personnel properly trained in these procedures.
Documentation of all routine and special maintenance and calibration will be maintained in an
appropriate field log book.
• Field instrumentation will be calibrated on-site at the beginning of each sampling day, or at
any time that instrmnent readings are questionable.
