•
MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID q M-1999-058
INSPECTION DATE 7/3/01
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS RCO
flowing water. Some of the fines placed in this roadway berm have clearly moved down the hillslope a distance of at least
20 feet below and outside the berm. Beyond that point, the natural slope is too steep to safely observe from above. It
is from this point on the road that the spruce tree on the trail below (reported by the Mclntyres) is believed to have received
the covering of fines.
Across the road from this location, placed against the wall on the west, is a single marble block, slightly larger than the
size of the jersey barriers. The operator stated that this will be placed in the missing barrier's gap, and that it is the intent
to gradually replace many jersey barriers with large blocks from the quarry. If so, they should be heavier than the jersey
barriers, and perhaps wider so they will be less likely to tip over.
Though it is understandable that the operator wishes to control runoff and must maintain the road in a passable condition
the use of such easily transaorted fine material was an improvident choice. A coarser denser material would be
recommended. can be locally obtained and is easily stockpiled for immediate use. The runoff control an the road has not
been maintained either through a continuous outer berm nor by directing runoff to the inner edge of the roadwav The
operator must remedy these conditions. The escape of the fines from the roadwav and moving down the slope is noted
as a problem on pane one, under the tonics of "erosion/sedimentation" and "offsite damage." Please see the last pane for
the corrective action date.
All work completed toward correcting this problem, plus other onsite mining or reclamation activities must be fully reported
in the annual report, the next one being due in August 2001. It is recommended that these activities also be depicted on
an annual report map.
There were no further items noted or discussed.
