3. The proposed in-stream mining will completely cut off sediment
bedload movement downstream for an unpredictable number of
years. The downstream waterways such as Toll Gate Creek, Sand
Creek and South Platte River are currently starved of historic
sediment bedload. As a result, these waterways are
experiencing extensive degradation. Our joint projects with
Aurora along Sand Creek, our planned river grade checks along
the South Platte River and the recent $750,000 bridge repair
work along the South Platte River by the State are in direct
response to this sediment bedload depletion. This mining
proposal, if approved, will add to this problem and will
contribute towards the expenditure of public and private funds
for additional bed control check structures and stream bank
armoring.
In summary, we recommend that Arapahoe County not approve this
request. If you have any questions concerning these comments, please
contact me. We would be willing to testify at the hearing should you so
desire.
Sincerely,
Bill DeGroo E.
Chief, Flood Plain Management
WGD/dm
cc: Brad Miller, EPA
Ed Bishof, Mined
Land Reclamation Division -
