RECLAMATION OF THE SWEDE CORNERS PIT
Owner-U.S.D.I. Bureau of Land Management
Operator-Southway Construction Co. Inc.
Alamosa, Colorado
RECLAMATION RECOMMENDATIONS
STOCKPILES
Surface (topsoil) and subsurface (subsoil) materials must be
saved and stockpiled separately during the mining process if
reclamation is to be accomplished.
The soils of this site are dominated by the Garita-Platoro
complex, 1 to 9 percent slope. A copy of the soils map and
soils descriptions are included with this report.
The surface soil that is very important to the reclamation
process is approximately 9 inches deep in the Garita soil
and up to 21 inches deep in the Platoro soil. The Garita
soil has a visible calcium carbonate layer at approximately
9 inches. This limy profile should not be mixed with the top
soil and should be used as the separation zone between the
topsoil and the subsoil where it exists. In the absence of
this limy layer, the top soil should be removed to a depth
of 16 inches and stockpiled separate from subsoil material.
The subsoil material removed and stockpiled should be of
sufficient quantity to provide a uniform thickness of
topsoil and subsoil of at least 18 inches over the entire
disturbed area for the reclamation process.
Two major stockpiles will be necessary to maintain the
separation of soil materials to be used for reclamation
(topsoil separate from subsoil). The topsoil (surface
material) from both soil types can be mixed as can the
subsurface materials of both soil types.
The stockpiles must be located far enough from the mine pit
so as not to be disturbed during gravel excavation. The size
and shape of these piles will be determined by the equipment
used to accumulate and pile the soil materials.
The volume of stockpiled material shall be adequate to apply
a layer of soil material to a minimum thickness of 18 inches
of which 8 inches will be topsoil. The stockpiles must be
stabilized with the same mix that is recommended for the
reclamation seeding at least once a year in late June or
late October. Seeded stockpiles will be maintained until
used for reclamation without adding material or disturbing
with heavy equipment.
