exists near the mine due to the steep slopes and low elevation. Any potential for recreation
would be limited to hiking, hunting, and stream fishing. Several factors limit grazing
potential on the area surrounding the mine site. Steep slopes, cliffs and a narrow canyon
present unlikely terrain for grazing cattle. Aspen forest, dry mountain shrubland, and
overstory cottonwood present poor opportunities for forage production. Oak brush in
particular is considered a noxious forage material causing gastric upset in cattle. However,
the reclaimed mine site will be utilized as a staging area in the spring and fall as cattle are
moved to and from their summer range in the higher elevations.
The county road, though passable to the public through the mine site, becomes little more
than a jeep trail shortly above the mine and therefore carries a very low volume of traffic,
except during hunting season. This road is obstructed by a locked gate on private property
a short distance beyond the mine.
There are no nearby residences of record, probably due to the remoteness of the site.
Pressure for this type of land use is very low in this area, and will probably not change
significantly during the life of the project.
• Land Use Maps, Numbered D-3-2 and D-3-3, delineate specific uses of the land in
accordance with land use categories established in Section 1.04 of the regulations. A
portion of the loadout facility is located on what is commonly referred to as the Diamond-A
Ranch. Such portion of the loadout facility is hereinafter referred to as the "Diamond-A
Parcel" and is more particularly described as:
All portions of the Permit Area located north and east of the
center of the Roaring Fork River in Township 7 South, Range
88 West, 6th Prime Meridian, Section 20, Lots 10, 11, 12, 15
and 16, and Section 29, Lots 2, 3 and 4.
During 1992 the Diamond-A Parcel was rezoned to allow from the Aspen Glen Planned
Unit Development, a residential golf course development. The Board of County
Commissioners approved this rezoning though its resolution No. 92-056.
All buildings on or within 1,000 feet of the proposed permit area are
r~
LJ
3-4 5/01
