The area to be excavated, for the most part,
is located in the southeast quarter of the southeast quarter of Section_2,:T,14S.
R, 86~•~. of the 6 P,M. Gunnison County. The proposed calving and feeding area encom-
passes approximately nine acres of which about two acres of gravel is planned to be
excavated.
Mr. Eccher wo~ild like to maintain the excavated slope void of most vegetation, so
as to maximize the benefits from the morning sunlight. The bare slope will act as
a heat absorbing shield allowing the calving and feeding area to remain warmer and
dry.
I do not forsee any conservation problems with Eccher's proposed use of the area.
However, in my opinion, special consideration should be given to the excavation
procedure. I believe excavation of the desired slope should be from the top down.
This should provide a more stable slope and minimize the accumulation of erosive
materials at the toe of the slope. The proposed 60 to 70~ slope would be too steep
for revegetation.unless netting is used. I checked several nearby slopes (highway
slope and roadcut slopes) that are in the 60 to '706 slope range on the same soil
and are void of vegetation, and they all appeared to be stable.
The plant species observed in the inventory covered about a nine acre area and not
just the proposed excavation site. Part of the proposed site is presently void of
vegetation from previous excavation.
I hope this information will satisfy your request, but if additional information is
needed, please feel free to contact our office.
Si cerely,
~~~~r~r~
is Antonia
District Conservationist
Gunnison,Field Office
encl:
o The Sod Conservation Serv~Ce
V is en epancy of the
Department of Apricuitura
SCS-AS-1
10-79
