Rates are based on drill seeding ~+0 Pure Live Seeds/sq. ft. The rate will be
doubled when seed is broadcast rather than drilled. The rates should be
raised accordingly to compensate for less than 100 Pure Live Seed.
Mulch netting will be needed when slopes are above 25 percent. Depending on
the extent of the reclaimed area, the soil should be tested and fertilizer
applied accordingly, at the time of seeding.
Reclamation and site preparation operations should be carried out on the
contour as much as possible. Diversion to prevent off site surface water from
entering the reclaimed area should be installed.
Topsoil should be applied to at least a 12 inch depth, and bound to the
material beneath by ripping. A good smooth, firm seedbed should be prepared
by discing and harrowing. Seed should not be drilled until the seedbed is
firm enough to insure a proper seeding depth (1/2 to 3/4 inches).
Exceptions are on steep areas where the surface should be left in a somewhat
roughed state or on sandy soils where seed can be planted deeper (1 to 1-1/2
inches).
Late fall is the optimum time to seed, although early spring is satisfactory
if seed can be drilled early enough. Seeding shouldn~t be performed after
early spring unless irrigated.
