We feel that several items need to be clarified in both the
mining and reclamation plans that apply to all 5 applications before e•~e
present them to the E~oard in May.
To complete your mining plans, we need to know to what depth gravel will be
extracted from each pit and the volume of topsoil to be stocY.piled. Please
provide a statement saying that these stoc7cpiles will be .located such that
damage due to erosion will be minimized. Also, an appropriate vegetative
cover should be maintained on the topsoil stockpile to minimize erosion riuring
the mining operation.
The water informatior.~ provided suggesnnecttts that no ground water will be encountered.
We should be notified if this proves^to be the case.
To develop the reclamation plans, a statement to the effect that you wi1.l follow
the Soil Conservation Service recommendations shoulr7 be provided. In addition
to the grasses suggested by SCS, we would suggest adding an appropriate shrub
(sage is a native shzub and is well adapted to the area).
Complete reclamation is not required until the pit is finalli/ abandoned. iloiv-
ever, for temporary abandonment, safety and erosion problrm~ should b, ~~~~oided
(i.e., by grading steep pit walls, etc.). If erosive probL=ms develcp, 1•erhaps
as a result of heavy rain storms or strong winds, appropriate cemedial actions
will be required.
Fences or other measures should be tak ~n to prevent eve rg~-~~nq during
reclamation.
