<br />10.0 CONCLOSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS <br />10.1 SUMMARY OF SUBSIDENCE/LANDSLIDE INTERACTION <br />In summary, it is felt that there clearly will be interaction <br />between subsidence events and landslide events. The effects of <br />subsidence on landsliding wi 11 consist of both of a short-term, <br />or temporary variety, and a long-term, or permanent, variety. <br />The short-term effects are primarily associated with the <br />development of tensile ground strain and the resulting tension <br />cracks. These effects may be minimized by minimizing the <br />potential for the development of high tensile strain zones on the <br />surface. Although the dynamics of the subsidence trough <br />development will almost certainly produce a very high tensile <br />• ground strain zone that migrates across the entire subsidence <br />trough, this effect is extremely short-lived and is not <br />considered in this study. Of concern is the minimizing of high <br />tensile zones at the completion of subsidence (the equilibrium <br />condition). <br />• <br />The long-term effects are associated primarily with rubblization <br />of the immediate roof and the development of chimney subsidence <br />causing permanent changes in shear strength conditions in the <br />subsurface and in the hydrogeologic conditions. These effects <br />may be minimized through control of subsidence near the outcrop <br />when overburden thicknesses fall to where it is possible for <br />chimney subsidence to develop. <br />29 <br />
