3) A soil test should be performed to determine the proper fertilizer
requirement. In lieu of a soil test, fertilize the entire gravel
pit with 40 pounds per acre each of available elemental nitrogen (N)
and phosphoric acid (P205). The fertilizer must be incorporated
into the top 2 to 3 inches of soil using a disk or harrow implement.
Fertilizer should be applied immediately prior to seeding, or at
the time of seeding.
4) Soils that have been overcompacted by traffic or equipment should
be tilled, to break up rooting restrictive layers, harrowed and
then rolled or packed to prepare the requfied Ei.rm seedbed. The
seedbed should be well settled and firm, but friable enough that
seed can be placed at [he recommended seeding depth.

5) Recocmnended varieties and seeding rates
Species Variety Mix Percentage
western wh.eatgrass Barton Rosana 35
Arriba
switchgrass Grenville 25
alkali sacaton Saltalk 40
These species were selected to correspond with the eca-site description of
the site.
If desired, trees and shrubs can be planted. Species recommended are Russian
olive, American plum, skunkbush sumac and willow.
6) Seeding should be done using a grass drill. The drill should be
equipped with a sattsEactory seeding mechanism, agitator, double
disk furrow openers, depth bands, and packer wheels or drag
chains. The distance between drill rows should not exceed 12 inches.
Broadcasting the seed can be done in areas which are inaccess-
ible Eor drilling. If the seed is broadcasted, then the above
seeding rates should be doubled. The broadcasted seeds should
be uniformly distributed over the ground surface, and mixed into
the soil with a harrow or by hand raking. Planting can be done
anytime between November 1 and May 31. Bedding should not be
done when the soil is frozen. The seeds should be planted
between 1/4 and 3/4 of an inch deep.
Pounds/acre
pure live seed
5.6
1.2
0.6
7) Mulch should be applied to the reseeded area to help moderate soil
temperatures, and improve soil moisture absorption and holding
capacity. Grass hay or cereal grain straw free of weed seeds is
recommended. Apply 4000 lbs./Ac. to the soil surface. At least
half of the material should be 10 inches or more in length. Do
not use fine materials. The mulch should be anchored either with
commerical netting products (on slopes steeper than 3:1) or
mechanically. The latter can be accomplished using a heavy disk
implement, with dull blades, to punch the mulch into the soil 2
to 3 inches deep. Crimping should not sever the mulch. Mulching
should not be done when wind velocity exceeds 15 m.p.h.
